Opposition Unity Talks: Atiku-Makinde Ticket Emerges, Amaechi Faces Fresh Setback

The opposition’s renewed drive for a united platform ahead of the 2027 general election may be reshaping its emerging presidential ticket, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde increasingly featuring in discussions that could displace former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi from the vice-presidential slot he was believed to have secured.

Sources familiar with ongoing consultations within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) said the push for a common opposition front could trigger a review of the emerging ticket, while another faction is considering the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as an alternative platform. The developments underscores the deepening negotiations and competing interests within the opposition months before the 2027 party primaries.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is said to be brokering talks among key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, aimed at building a common front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC. The consultations have drawn backing from G100, a coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, including Salihu Moh. Lukman and Nnena Ukeje, who published an open letter urging opposition leaders to unite behind one candidate rather than repeat the fractured campaigns of past elections.
Makinde’s appeal, according to sources, rests less on political symbolism than on financial logic: as a sitting governor with an established structure, he could ease the funding burden of a nationwide campaign. He reportedly featured in early running-mate discussions before Amaechi emerged following disputes over the presidential nomination process, including threats of legal action.
Insiders say Amaechi is unlikely to give up the slot without a fight, making him the central obstacle to any Atiku-Makinde arrangement. That tension captures the opposition’s core dilemma: uniting against the APC may require sacrificing figures who have already fought hard for their position, and the resulting friction could prove more damaging than the fragmentation unity is meant to solve.
