Exploring the Emotional Wardrobe of White and Black

By: Seun Emmanuel

White and Black opts for subtle costumes, prioritizing emotional expression rather than flashy visuals. Under the wardrobe direction of Jadato Design, the film adopts a minimalist fashion language that supports character psychology rather than dominating the screen.

The largely monochrome palette, an extension of the film’s title, functions as an emotional code. Black and white operate as visual markers of tension, vulnerability and internal conflict. While this creates cohesion, the limited range occasionally results in visual repetition, placing greater emphasis on performance than wardrobe evolution.

The costumes remain grounded in realism, particularly in their portrayal of migration and student life. Clothing choices feel lived-in and practical, a deliberate move that reinforces authenticity. Symbolic details, such as the white shoe and knee-high boots, quietly signal aspiration and self-perception without overt exposition.

A subtle vintage undertone gives the wardrobe a timeless quality, distancing it from trend-led fashion. Ultimately, the costuming in White and Black succeeds as narrative support, controlled, intentional and emotionally aware, reflecting Jadato Design’s disciplined approach to cinematic styling.
