October 25, 2024, marks a historic day in Nigeria as the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) held its second Policy Roundtable on “Special Seats for Women” at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. This year’s theme, *“64 Years of Independence: Inclusive Democracy and Options for Special Seats for Women”*, highlighted the need to foster a political system that ensures gender inclusivity and equal representation in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
In his opening remarks, IPAC’s National Chairman, Hon. Yusuf M. Dantalle, underscored the council’s role as a unified body representing all registered political parties in Nigeria. He emphasized IPAC’s commitment to creating an electoral landscape that is free, credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful. Dantalle also noted that IPAC’s mission extends beyond electoral oversight, providing a platform that encourages constructive political competition while promoting tolerance, collaboration, and respect. “IPAC is dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Dantalle remarked. “This approach not only strengthens our democratic institutions but also nurtures the spirit of teamwork necessary for sustainable political progress in Nigeria.”
Dr. Sonnia Agu, ECOWAS Woman and Youth Ambassador, participated as a key discussant, bringing a powerful voice to the conversation on women’s political empowerment. She highlighted the importance of securing special seats for women in Nigerian politics to create a truly inclusive democracy. “I love this event because it tackles one of the most pressing issues in Nigerian politics—creating an equitable democratic space,” Agu stated. “Women deserve respect and prominent roles in politics, not for sentimentality but because they too can lead. It’s all about shifting mindsets and recognizing that leadership is not exclusive to men.”
The event featured an impressive lineup of notable speakers and experts in politics and development. Prof. Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, served as the keynote speaker, while Prof. Attahiru Jega, former INEC Chairman, led the discussions on inclusive democracy. Other prominent voices included Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP); Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim, Deputy National Woman Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC); Dr. Mustapha Ajidullahi, Principal Lecturer at the Department of Social Development, Kaduna Polytechnic; Jide Ojo, Development Consultant and Public Affairs Analyst; and Dr. Adaora Onyechere Sydney Jack, Technical Director of IPAC.
The roundtable provided a collaborative space for leaders, advocates, and political thinkers to address challenges and propose actionable solutions for gender inclusion in Nigerian politics. Attendees left with renewed hope for a more inclusive democracy, strengthened by IPAC’s leadership and commitment to fostering equal representation in Nigeria’s political sphere.
