The 8th edition of the Nigerian Private University Games (NPUGA) was officially declared open at Babcock University, drawing together athletes from over 30 private universities across the nation. The grand opening ceremony took place at the university’s stadium, where students proudly paraded in a vibrant and well-coordinated march-past, representing their respective institutions with pride and energy.
A Message of Unity and Sportsmanship
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Philemon Amanze, Senior Vice President Academics at Babcock University, delivered a heartfelt welcome to the assembled athletes and officials. In his address, Professor Amanze highlighted the Games as more than just a sporting event. He described NPUGA as a meaningful platform that fosters unity, encourages friendships across cultural divides, and cultivates discipline and teamwork among students.
He further noted that events like NPUGA are instrumental in identifying and nurturing future talents capable of representing Nigeria on both national and global stages.
An Electric Start to the Games
The atmosphere at the opening was electrifying — filled with music, dancing, and resounding cheers from students and supporters who had gathered in high spirits. The excitement continued right onto the pitch, where host team Babcock University faced off against Crawford University in the first football match of the tournament.
Crawford University made an early statement by netting two goals in the first half, putting the hosts on the back foot. Babcock University fought back late in the game, scoring a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the second half. Despite their efforts, the home side fell short, ending the match with a narrow 2-1 defeat.
Looking Ahead
As NPUGA 2025 moves into full swing, anticipation is high for days filled with intense competition, remarkable athletic displays, and moments of sportsmanship. Participants and fans alike look forward to a tournament that not only celebrates excellence in sports but also strengthens bonds among Nigeria’s future leaders.
