Nigerians Dismiss Naira Abuse Allegations Against Okoya’s Sons

The social media space was recently abuzz with a viral video allegedly showing Subomi and Wahab, sons of Nigerian billionaire industrialist Aare Razak Akanni Okoya (CON), engaging in the abuse of the Nigerian Naira during a video shoot featuring their sons. The video sparked widespread debate across various platforms.

Mixed Reactions from Nigerians
While some critics viewed the display as inappropriate, others defended the Okoya brothers, arguing that such acts are common in the Nigerian entertainment industry. They cited examples of popular artists like Kcee, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Phyno, and Asake, who have showcased Naira notes, as well as foreign currencies, in their videos without facing backlash from authorities.

Supporters of the Okoya brothers argue that the criticism is unwarranted and stems from envy of their family’s success. The Okoya family, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector for over 60 years, has made significant contributions to the country’s economy by creating jobs and improving the standard of living for many.

EFCC Summons Okoya’s Sons
Following the video’s circulation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly invited Subomi and Wahab Okoya for questioning at its Special Operations Office in Ikoyi, Lagos, regarding the alleged abuse of the Naira.

Public Opinions on the Issue
Nigerians took to social media to express their views, with most dismissing the allegations:

  • @nellymesik: “Frankly, there was no abuse of the Naira here.”
  • @mc_yannist: “Where is the abuse? I’m not seeing any Naira in this video or on the floor.”
  • @iamda_saint: “For Naira wey don fall?”
  • @oouhoestory_: “When is Asake dropping his album abeg?”
  • @mister_boffy: “Boys promoting their songs with fake Naira notes is not a crime. Case closed!”
  • @sisiogebeauty: “No be real money. Make all of una calm down.”
  • @femi_alabii: “So unnecessary!”
  • @stephen_jachike: “I no see Naira abuse for here o!”
  • @avura_: “Which offense the boys commit if no be hate wey full una heart!”

The controversy surrounding Subomi and Wahab Okoya highlights the polarizing nature of public opinion on the actions of prominent figures. While some call for accountability, others see the criticisms as an unjust attack on a family that has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s economic growth.
