A non-governmental organization, Oniroyin Support Initiative (OSI), is set to launch an empowerment programme aimed at supporting the families of deceased journalists in Ogun State.
In a statement issued by the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Adekunle Olayeni, the Chairman, Mrs. Funke Fadugba, emphasized the importance of the initiative:
“We are proud to launch this programme, which demonstrates our commitment to supporting the families of journalists who made a profound impact on society but sadly passed away when their services were most needed. We believe their families deserve our care and support, and we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in their lives.”
The programme will be officially launched on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Basic Trust International, beside ProvidusBank, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, starting at 12 noon.
The event will be chaired by renowned journalist, Mr. Richard Akinnola, and will feature the public presentation of cheques and grants to selected families of deceased journalists, ensuring their continued well-being.
According to OSI Convener, Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, the initiative is designed to empower bereaved families, particularly those of journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Together, we can make a difference in their lives and promote a culture of welfare and safety for journalists, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten and their families receive the support they need,” he stated.
The programme will also include a keynote address by the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, along with goodwill messages from dignitaries and testimonials from affected families.
Notable attendees include:
- The Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, Oba Abdulganiyu Olusegun Awokoya (Royal Father of the Day)
- Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo (Mother of the Day)
- Dr. Tomi Coker, Ogun State Commissioner for Health
Additionally, OSI, in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, will provide free medical outreach for journalists attending the event.
