Inhabitants of Sobo Arobiodu and Adeyemo Alakija streets in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria are currently living in distress as they face the recurring issue of bad roads and severe flooding during the rainy season. The roads, which were once well-tiled and suitable for drive, these roads have turned into a nightmare for residents over the past one year since the Lagos State Government initiated a road reconstruction project that was unfortunately left incomplete.
The project, which aimed to improve the infrastructure of the area, instead resulted in a haphazard disorganization of the roads, leaving them in a worse condition than before. The incomplete construction work has become a breeding ground for stagnant water, causing floods to wreak havoc in the vicinity whenever it rains. The residents, who have endured this deteriorating situation for months, are now desperately calling upon the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, to intervene and address their plight as the situation exacerbates day by day.
The impact of the dilapidated roads on the residents’ daily lives cannot be understated. Commuting has become a challenge, with the roads transforming into treacherous pools of water, rendering them virtually impassable during heavy rains. Motorists are left stranded, while pedestrians have to navigate through ankle-deep water, risking their safety and health. The flooded roads have also resulted in damage to vehicles, causing financial burdens on already struggling residents.
Sobo Arobiodu and Adeyemo Alakija streets, which were once considered prominent locations in GRA, have now become synonymous with frustration and inconvenience. The residents, who previously took pride in their well-maintained neighborhood, are now forced to endure the aftermath of the abandoned reconstruction project.
In a video currently trending on social media, a resident expressed her disappointment with the lack of progress and pleaded for immediate action. She said, “We are appealing to Governor Babajide Sanwoolu to come to our aid. The condition of our roads has become unbearable, and the flooding is causing us great distress. Our pleas for assistance seem to have fallen on deaf ears, but we hope that the Governor will hear our cry and take swift action.”
The residents are hopeful that their plea will be heard by the Lagos State Government and that the necessary steps will be taken to rectify the situation promptly. They believe that Governor Babajide Sanwoolu’s commitment to infrastructure development and improving the lives of Lagosians will extend to their community, alleviating their plight and restoring their faith in a better future.
As the residents of Sobo Arobiodu and Adeyemo Alakija streets continue to endure the effects of the abandoned road construction project, their hopes rest on the swift intervention of the Lagos State Government. Only time will tell if their calls for assistance will be answered, and if their once thriving neighborhood will be restored to its former glory.
