In what has become a day of double tragedy for Nigeria, the revered Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been confirmed dead. The sad announcement was made by the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, just hours after the death of his close friend and former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, was also made public.
Oba Adetona passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a monumental legacy of leadership, cultural pride, and transformative impact.
The monarch, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely regarded as a beacon of unity and progress. Under his 65-year reign, Ijebuland experienced tremendous growth, witnessing a cultural and infrastructural renaissance that earned the admiration of many within and outside the country.
One of his most celebrated achievements was the elevation of the annual *Ojude Oba* festival into an internationally recognized cultural event, attracting global attention and boosting local tourism and economy. His lifelong commitment to education, health care, and the preservation of Yoruba traditions further solidified his place as one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers.
Governor Abiodun, while announcing the monarch’s death, described it as a colossal loss not only to Ogun State but to the entire nation.
“We mourn the passing of a titan. Oba Adetona was more than a traditional ruler — he was a symbol of dignity, resilience, and visionary leadership. His contributions will forever be etched in our hearts and history,” the Governor said.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, the people of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large prepare to bid farewell to a royal icon whose legacy will never fade.
