Former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Nurudeen Akinpelu Aina, who represented Ado-Odo Ota Constituency I, has declared his intention to contest for the Ogun West Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Aina, who served in the 7th and 8th Assemblies between 2011 and 2019, made this known during an interview with Newslife Online on Wednesday in Ota, Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Speaking on his aspiration, the lawyer and former member of the Ogun State Judicial Service Commission said his experience, legislative track record, and commitment to people-oriented projects have prepared him for the Senate.
According to him, his decision to contest is driven by a desire to replicate and expand the impactful initiatives he executed during his tenure in the state assembly.
“I possess the constitutional requirements, experience, and legislative acumen needed to serve effectively at the National Assembly,” he said.
Aina noted that he has remained a consistent member of the progressive fold since 2011, beginning with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now the All Progressives Congress (APC). He added that his constituents, party leaders, and stakeholders can attest to his performance while in office.
“Currently, I am into legal practice and still contributing to the development of my constituency. I live among my people in Ota,” he added.
Reflecting on his political journey, Aina said he previously contested for the House of Representatives in 2019 and 2023 but did not secure the party’s ticket. However, he expressed optimism about his chances in 2027.
“In Nigeria, elections are conducted on party platforms. I have remained loyal to the APC since 2011, and I believe that if I secure the party’s ticket, I will emerge victorious in the general election,” he said.
He further emphasized the importance of legal and legislative experience in effective lawmaking, noting that his background as a lawyer and former lawmaker gives him an advantage.
Aina also acknowledged the performance of the current senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, stating that his achievements provide a model to build upon.
“He has shown capacity through infrastructural development and empowerment programmes. I intend to build on that template to deliver more dividends of democracy,” Aina said.
Highlighting his past contributions, he recalled initiating ward-to-ward empowerment programmes during his time in the state assembly. He added that he continues to support community development efforts, including road grading, culvert construction, and the building of two schools in honour of his late mother.
On the issue of candidate selection within the APC, Aina expressed support for the consensus arrangement, describing it as a strategy that promotes unity and reduces internal conflicts.
“I support consensus because it minimizes costs, prevents crises, and strengthens party cohesion. I hope the party leadership will consider me as the consensus candidate for Ogun West,” he said.
