News reaching us has claimed that former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe is dead. According to close family member, the ex-football star died of Covid-19 and not brain damage as it was reported.
Sofoluwe, popularly known as the Dean of Defence passed late Tuesday, 9 February, 2021 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos.
According to the family, the late defender was diagnosed of Covid-19 rather than the brain damage being speculated in the media.
Sofoluwe was nicknamed Dean of Defence by the late ace football commentator, Earnest Okonkwo for his defensive dexterity.
Yisa Sofoluwe was born on 28 December, 1967.
He was a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as a defender. He won 40 caps and scored one goal for his country.
Sofoluwe was Super Eagles regular left back between 1983 and 1988, playing at the 1984 and 1988 African Nations Cups winning silver medals on both occasions.
He started his football career at defunct ITT Waves owned by the late Aare Moshood Kashimawo Abiola. So, it was easy for him to transfer his service to Abiola Babes where he played most of his playing career winning the FA Cup twice on two occasions in 1985 and 1987.
