From Zamfara’s Frontlines to Senate Floor: Yari’s Security Appeal Carries Weight, and Baggage

When Senator Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari calls for national unity against insecurity, the geography of his constituency lends the statement an urgency most lawmakers cannot claim.

Zamfara State, which Yari governed from 2011 to 2019, remains one of the epicentres of Nigeria’s banditry crisis. Thousands of residents have been killed or displaced by armed groups whose operational sophistication has challenged successive administrations. It is from this context that the senator’s latest statement draws its most pointed authority.

Yari’s statement condemns what he terms “senseless acts of violence and criminality” and frames insecurity not as a government failure but as a collective challenge demanding citizen participation. He calls on every Nigerian to contribute through vigilance, information-sharing, and community-level peace promotion.

The appeal to traditional rulers and religious leaders is particularly notable. In the North-West, where banditry has flourished partly due to weakened community trust structures, these figures have served both as peace negotiators and, controversially in some documented cases, as interlocutors with armed groups. Yari’s call for them to serve as “bridges of peace” reflects an acknowledgment of their irreplaceable role in grassroots conflict resolution.

His commendation of President Tinubu’s security leadership signals political alignment but also raises the question of legislative action. Unity appeals, however sincere, must ultimately translate into policy. Whether the Senate will match the rhetoric with accelerated security sector reforms remains the more consequential test.
