Former Special Adviser and Governorship Candidate in Osun State Dies at 82

 

Alhaji Ismaila Oladimeji Oginni, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and former Special Adviser to Yobe State Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim, has passed away at the age of 82. Oginni died on Sunday, July 21, 2024, after a brief illness.

 

Born on May 11, 1942, Alhaji Oginni had a distinguished career in both politics and sports. He served as the governorship candidate for Osun State in the 2007 election under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). His political journey began in the 1970s when he joined Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

 

Oginni’s educational background includes a degree and a master’s in Economics from London. Before entering politics, he worked with Leventis, a prominent Nigerian conglomerate.

 

In the realm of sports, Alhaji Oginni was the former Chairman of Yobe Desert Stars Football Club, where he led the team to the FA Cup final against Julius Berger. His passion for sports was a significant aspect of his multifaceted career.

 

Oginni’s legacy extends to his family, notably his son, Remi Oginni, a Nollywood actor and event personnel who currently serves as the Special Adviser on Sport and Entertainment to the Oyo State House of Assembly Chairman House Committee On Sports And youth, Hon. Yusuf Oladen.

 

The political and sporting communities have expressed their condolences, remembering Alhaji Oginni for his contributions and leadership. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
